Cool! I’ve got a blog going. I’ve been DocMisty to friends and family for a while, so I thought I’d post for the world to see. What else is an M.D. good for when you stay at home and homeschool 4 kids?

Yes, I spent four years in the lovely world of medical school, had 2 kids along the way, an adventure in itself, and decided that I’d had enough of that. I love my family, and I couldn’t see leaving them for another 4 years of 80+ hours a week for a residency. And to be honest, the part about helping people ended up being such a tiny percent of my day, that I was pretty burnt out on the whole thing.

Now, I get to do all the ‘helping’ I want without forms, files, reports, Medicare, etc. Obviously I can’t prescribe medicines or really treat disease, but I get to do the part I like the best – teach and help people understand what’s going on. You know, illness always seems to be a lot less scary when you understand what’s going on, what your options are, what the alternative choices are, etc.

I also love using alternative medicine for all the chronic, nagging, day-to-day discomforts that modern medicine either can’t fix or considers beneath its notice.

As a kid, I was in charge of the herb garden, and we grew up on peppermint tea for stomach ills, comfrey poultices for injuries, and a wad of lovely smushed green yarrow shoved gently up our noses for the occasional nosebleed.

I continued the tradition, grew my own herbs and learned how to make ointments. They started in old Tupperware containers or scooped into a baggy to share with friends who had eczema, sprained ankles, or babies with rashes. Eventually I was giving away more than I kept, and friends offered to pay me. Now, I’ve got TurtleBalm my little website with herbal ointments, handmade soaps, LipSilk lip balms, and the KozyWrap, a baby wearing wrap that saved my life when I took my firstborn to four hours of medical school lectures a day.

So, let’s see, I homeschool 4 kids (under age 8), am an underpaid doctor, a black belt, a novice website owner, and dabble in beekeeping, science fiction writing, and a variety of other odd hobbies. Don’t ask about the winter I built a hydroponic system to grow tomatoes next to the shower in our upstairs bathroom. Yes, I have a very patient husband.

    As far as the rash – I know a lot of skin conditions flare up with stress and tiredness – and maybe the ordeal of traveling is exacerbating it. Is Ian at all stressed about airplanes and flying? If that is the case, making a self-hypnosis script to listen to on a tape or MP3 player would be a good idea.

    If it isn’t stress, then you try to identify the cause, which it sounds like you have. That just leaves the flight itself, which could be the lower pressure or getting dehydrated – make sure to drink plenty of water and get up and move around when possible.

    Other than that, I would suggest trying some anti-inflammatory herbs. My First Aid Balm has a lot of herbs used in inflammatory conditions like Chamomile, Lavendar, and Tea Tree Oil. Also, the Eczema Balm has a higher concentration of Calendula and Chamomile, known for their soothing properties. Finally the Sport Balm has Camphor, which has also helped in inflammed injuries, but is rather strong to be putting around the eyes.   • Hi Doc Misty! I love your new websites and all the information you have provided on them already. I am a fan of yours so much that I have put these under my favorites list, which says a lot, right? I will probably be getting some of these balms. They sound great.
    I do have a question for you….

    My husband and I traveled to TX over the 4th and everything went fine on the flight down there but once we got off the plane I noticed he had a rash on and around his eyes and above his eyebrows on his forehead. At first I thought it might me some allergic reaction to something he ate but I realized we ate exactly the same food that day, food he had already eaten before. He does have a history of rosacea which has been under control for a few years now. He generally tries to stay out of the sun, although he tans easily and he avoids caffeine, both of which aggravate it or make his sensitive skin much redder in the cheeks and nose areas. So this generally diminishes after the 5 days we are there but we returned on separate flights due to extensive flight delays on the 9th and he arrived home with the same rash again after the flight but even a little worse. Now his eyelids and skin are read, dry, wrinkly and slightly edematous. This has gotten worse on and around the eyes so I was strongly considering seeing a Family MD or Dermatologist about this but then I remembered your new site. He did beak down and get some Benadryl for the symptoms which made him really tired seems to be helping mildly so far.

    I am inclined to think of this as an allergic reaction rather than another breakout of his rosacea given its location and timing of these rashes. So it made me think did he have something new in his diet or new eyeglass cleaner, the water or something else like barometric pressure changes on the planes or what?

    Do you have any advice or remedies on how to combat not only the symptoms but also prevent this from reoccurring in the future since he will definitely have to fly again soon in 2weeks? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Misty! Congratulations on you blog! Way to go! I look forward to coming here for everything from a hang nail to a hang over! (LOL I wish!) It’s nice to have another homeschooling mother of 4 to share the trenches with! There’s always room isn’t there!!

    Keep up the great work! By the way, the First Aid Balm worked really well on my tattoo as well as on a very tender sore I had on my hip! Ouch!
